Donovan double sends LA Galaxy top

Landon Donovan grabbed a double as the Los Angeles Galaxy went top of the MLS Western Conference with a 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers.

An early goal from Chad Barrett and a Donovan penalty had the Galaxy two up inside eight minutes, before the striker added his second after 67 minutes.

Columbus Crew missed the chance to move level on points with Eastern Conference leaders the New York Red Bulls after being held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man Toronto FC.

Tony Tchani had opened the scoring for the Canadian side just four minutes before the break as he slotted home his first goal for the club, but his decision to leap an advertising hoarding to celebrate with fans saw him collect a second booking.

Columbus Crew made the most of that good fortune as Emilio Renteria levelled three minutes into the second half, but they could not find a winner and now lie third in the table.

Chivas USA leapfrogged San Jose Earthquakes near the foot of the Western Conference with a 2-1 win over their rivals. Chris Wondolowski fired San Jose into an early lead but Heath Pearce and substitute Mariano Trujillo secured the three points for Chivas.

Expansion outfit the Vancouver Whitecaps took a first-half lead against FC Dallas but eventually succumbed to a 2-1 defeat.

Alain Rochat first the Whitecaps ahead in the 25th minute before David Ferreira missed a penalty for Dallas. But second-half strikes from George John (53) and Eric Avila (82) gave them the points and left the Whitecaps still searching for only their second win of the season.

Rajko Lekic grabbed a late winner as the New England Revolution came from 2-1 down to beat Sporting Kansas City 3-2. Marko Perovic had given New England an early lead only for Kej Kamara to soon level and then added a second-half penalty for Sporting. But Shalrie Joseph equalised and Lekic grabbed his first goal for the Revolution in just his second game.

Andrew Hainault's late header earned the Houston Dynamo a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire after Diego Chaves had opened the scoring.
